Who says farmers do not have initiatives. They can be excellent researcher if they choose to be.Square Watermelons

A round watermelon takes a lot of space when in the fridge. Usually, because of their round shape, they sit awkwardly on the shelves of refridgerators, or even when on a table.

Smart Japanese farmers have found a way out of this problem. They force their watermelons to grow into square shapes .. meeting market expectations. You want to know how they do this? Come back later for the information.

Watermelons for the market

A mud house with thatched roof is a very common thing in the countryside. A storey building in such settings is for the rich. This one was captured in a village with a story that it was up for sale. The owner may be looking for money to start a “new farm.”

ICT is not only the for schooled. The unschooled also have the opportunity to interface with ICT … but at least they should have some training. They should at least know what the tools are to be able to use them effectively. This is what GINKS did it its reserch project at Ekumfi Atakwaa. The test group was called ACCASI – (Atakwaa Community Center for Agri-info Sharing through ICT). The name is self explanatoty. To be able to use the tools effectively, there was the need to take the club members who were mosly uneducated adults between the ages of 45 and 50, through an adult literacy programme. They were trained in how to read the vernacular for that community – Fante. The faciltator was Teacher Isaac, also from the community.

This video shows one of the class session. They are going through spelling and reading two and three letter words. The video is in the Fante language. Enjoy it

The Guys

Five days continous training, 8.30am till long after 6 pm is a real tough agenda. The group decided with the organisers to have some time off on Sunday to release some of the built up tension. Some of the participants took the opportunity to do laundry. Others just relaxed at their hostels. Some of them also took the opportunity to go to the beach to spend some time there.

It’s amazing what one can capture with a small digital camera. The temptation to capture some of the natural beautiful scenes was just too great to overcome. Curtesy, the ginks‘ little digital camera, let me bring you some to the scenes at the beach.

Enjoy

Simpa Open at the Beach

WODiVThe Winneba Open Digital Village (WODiV) in collaboration with the Ghana Information Network for Knowledge Sharing (GINKS) and Wirless Ghana is organising a 10-days technical training in Wireless Networking at the digital village in Winneba termed the SIMPA OPEN SUMMIT. Today is the third day of the of the workshop. It has turned out to be a very interesting day. This whole day is planned for the Configuration of Network Securities on a wireless Access Point. The first part of the day went very well – theory on the various network securities on a wireless networt. The second part of the day was to be for the practical hands-on. After a very heavy meal of Fufu with goat light Soup, Ampesi with kontomire or garden egg stew, Fried or Plain rice with chicken or fish (curtesy Cindy and Barbara, our cooks), we were all set for the serious practical work of configuring securities on our already set up Linksys wireless routers … but oh, this was not to be.Cable Termination

The instructor, Victor, offered to demonstrate briefly how to make a Cat 5 network cable for those who did not know how these cables are terminated. This turned the whole workshop into a Wired training, instead of the original wireless one. Termination of cables took the rest of the day. Victor tried serveral times to move the group back to the wireless stage but this was not to be. The participants were all engrossed deeply with the termination of their cables; they were not even hearing what Victor was saying.

Well what can we say??? Wireless turned Wired …. “but hey, they are all networking, Abi !!!, says one Nigerian Participant.
